Act One: Waiting

I "won" a walk-on part on 24 through a silent auction held at the Curtis School Fair, which is on Mullholland Drive in LA. This was on October 13, 2002

I called the 24 office the next day. My contact was to be one Raquel Osborne, the Extras Casting Director. I asked for her, but she wasn't there. Instead I talked to her assistant Marjan. She tells me to send in a picture and they would call within the week. (7 Days). So I wrapped up one of my headshots from my mostly unused pile and send one her way.

Act Two: Surprise!

Not hearing from them within a week. I called again just to see if they got the picture. This being Hollywood, if they say they'll call and they don't, you should give a call to check up since they may have forgotten about you. I asked for Raquel. She didn't work there anymore. Uhhhhhh, Okay. So I asked for Marjan. She didn't work there either. The ENTIRE Extras Casting Department had been fired!

Act Three: Waiting

I asked, "well who am I supposed to talk to?" They didn't know. I talked to Chris Porterfield, the production coordinator. I talked to Robert Benzanilla. After about a week I got in contact with Anne Cofell, who worked in Publicity. (Trivia: The character Ted Cofell is named after Anne). Anne asked me to send in a copy of the background artist certificate, and guess what, another picture. So I did. And I waited. I called every few weeks. For a while they were shooting in only one place so they needed the same extras over and over again. Then they went on hiatus from December 17th to January 6th. I was passed to Jen Hodges, who kept telling me that the background guy named Lee Miles had my picture and would call me in a few days. Several times she told me that.

Act Four: FINALLY

On February 10th, four (4) months after I won the walkon, Lee finally left a message on my answering machine. I had to be there tomorrow in Malibu where they were filming, rain or shine. I was to play an administrator at a sheriff's jailhouse, to bring a sports coat, no black shirt or pants.

I drove out to Malibu from my place near Newhall. The location was supposed to be a sheriff's station, but the actual location was the Malibu City Hall at 23555 Civic Center Way. They had filmed here before earlier in the season but not they were filming it as a separate location. They just dress it up differently each time. Later in the day they were going to film the location again as a hospital. It was raining. I got off the 101 on Las Virgenes Road and stopped for gas. Standing there at the pump I watched the cars driving by and I could pick out which ones were extras headed for the shoot. They were the ones with the racks of clothing hanging in the back of their cars.

Act Five: Mud,Mud,Mud

I arrived at the site a little early, and as you can see from the picture on the left, it was still raining. We were required to park across from the City Hall in a large field, which had been turned into one large mud pie. Lee had told me to track down track down Rebecca Levinson in the Assistant Director Unit. It was the last trailer. Robert Benz was also there, a tall guy, as well as Mark Rabinowitz a shorter one. I went in, told them who I was, and they looked my name up on the list.

They said I wasn't on the list.

Rebecca said that they always made these walk-on promises but never told them about it. Mark said "Hey let's make him a Sheriff." I was okay with that, but then they found the updated list from Lee Miles and I was on there as an administrator. So they took me to costumes and put me in a suit and put me in with the other extras.

Act Six: A Sheriff After All

I snapped a picture of the waiting room so you can see what most acting is if you aren't waiting in your own trailer. It's just sitting in costume waiting for your time to fill out a scene. During the wait Robert came in and handed out the SAG vouchers and gave me one. WHOA. I was going to be paid for something that I paid for. First time that happened. Offset the cost of the silent auction a little.

A little more waiting and either Mark or Robert came in and got me. They wanted me to be a sheriff after all. So I got out of the suit, and into a sheriff's uniform complete with gun and holster. I started to play with it but the other extras told me I could get fired on the spot for doing that and never invited back. I listened to them even though I wasn't planning on coming back anyway. Always good to avoid bad stuff at these locations.

They stuffed me into a cage where prisoners are processed. That's when I found out Sutherland wasn't there. The gal who plays the daughter Elisha Cuthbert was there. Man she is short. And cute. It was a closed set so I couldn't take any pictures of the actual filming. We filmed several scenes of her coming into the station, as well as a few when she goes to the restroom to make a call or something. Along the way I got to hear from other extras that were telling me how to get max airtime in front of the camera by moving here or there.

Act Seven: A Final Surprise

We did this for several hours until we were finally released. As I was leaving Rebecca pulled me aside so that the other extras wouldn't see and gave me the autographed picture of Sutherland you see on the right. So I didn't get to meet him, (didn't even meet the daughter) but I got an autographed picture that was neat.
